Ready for your tutorial on How to Start a Blog ~ Boot Camp ~ Part 3?

I hope so!  I'm excited for you.

Have you completed your missions from Boot Camp Part 1 and Part 2?  Great!  Let's move on.  If you missed Part 1 or 2, start HERE.

Hopefully at this point y'all have figured out what you want to blog about, signed up (preferably with blogger.com) and chosen a cool blog names.  Good job, troops.

What's next, you say?

Today you will simply add a header (the top portion of your blog with a photo) and create your background, your blog's template style and other small details.  It will be fun and not super complicated, I promise.

There is even a Video Tutorial JUST for you
(I know I love video tutorials when learning).

Your Blog Header

The header of a blog is the first thing that catches your eye when you look at a blog, right?  That large photo or name in the very top frame of every website.  You will be set up with a super simple one today and you can improve upon it whenever you get ready.

There are many beautiful blog headers out there but don't feel intimidated because most people pay someone else to do this for them eventually.  Unless this is something you would like to pay for right now, you can place a simple photo there for now~I'll show you how.

  • Go to blogger.com and log in your gmail address that you have created
  • In the drop down menu choose 'layout'
  • Click 'add a gadget' near the top of the page
  • Scroll down until you see 'add header' and click the plus sign
  • Click within the white rectangle you now have called 'header' and click 'edit'
  • You can add your blog name and upload a picture from your computer
  • Play around with the different choices of how to position header and click 'save'
  • Hover over your 'header' rectangle and move near the top of your screen
  • Click 'save arrangement' near the top right of your screen

That's it.  You did it!

Customizing Your Blog

  • In the drop down menu choose 'template'
  • On this screen choose 'customize'
  • Click 'Templates' in left column and choose your favorite one
  • Click 'save to blog' in top right corner of page
  • Click 'Background' in left column and choose favorite one
  • Click 'save to blog' in top right corner of page
  • Click 'Layout' in left column and choose your favorite one
  • Click 'save to blog' in top right corner of page
  • Click 'Advanced' and choose text color, style and size
  • Click 'save to blog' in top right corner of page
That's it.  You did it!

You will notice that I skipped over the choice of  'Adjust Widths' and I did so on purpose.  I wouldn't mess too much with this yet unless you have to.  If you choose incorrectly, it could mess up how your gadgets fit into your sidebar and other issues.

Your Mission 3 Assignment is complete.  So how does it look?   How do you feel so far?
